Myra Canyon on the former Kettle Valley Railroad looking towards the northwest. This location is the highest point of the Carmi subdivision of the now ababdoned railline. Constructed in 1915 to provide an all Canadian rail link for the Kooteneys the KVR slowly withered after World War II. The Coquihalla subdivision was the first to go in 1960, due to slides which severed the line the previous year. That section was a victim of difficult terrain and heavy precipitation that required tremendous maintainance. The Carmi subdivision fell in the early 1970s due to low traffic levels. The eighteen bridges in the Myra Canyon were left in place and were made part of a bicycle trail due in large part to the work of numerous volunteers in the 80s and 90s. Tragically twelve of the sixteen wooden trestles were destroyed in the forest fire that swept through parts of the City of Kelowna in 2003.The two trestles on the left survived the 2003 firestorm, while the two on the right were destroyed. The city of Kelowna can be seen in the distance.
