Othello tunnels on the Coquihalla subdivision of the former Kettle Valley Railroad near Hope BC. The tunnels are so named because the nearest station was named Othello. The cheif engineer of the Kettle Valley RR, Andrew McCullough, was a lover of Shakespeare and named a number of stations on the Coquihalla subdivision with Shakespearean names which can still be seen on the highway through the area. When the railroad was contructed through the Coquihalla in 1915 a wall of granite separated the valley from the Fraser Valley at Hope. The solution was to drill four tunnels in alignment through the canyon, crossing the river twice. The line was abandoned in 1960, but the tunnels are now part of a provincial park and can be accessed by the public.
